Year SixSeason: Winter Month: December Breeding / Birthing: Year Round There is no end to how cold it is getting, and there is only more winter to come! With the cold season comes extremes of ice and snow that can be painfully sharp on the paws in the north, even for the thickest pelts. Snow has been spotted in even the southern region's woodland cliffs and marshes.

"Give me a moment," Cadmon called to his injured guest. "I just need to arrange some things."
Blood and herb poultice filled Cadmon's nose as he stumbled into his den. The odor came from his latest patient, a victim of abuse as he assumed. He tidied up his sleeping area to allow his guest a place to lie down. They had recently put herbs on the wolf's wounds, but Cadmon wanted to have a better look at the damage. Flesh wounds were easy to deal with, but Cadmon knew that there could be other complications involved with abuse. The wolf could have anything from an infection to a broken bone. A full inspection would be required to make sure this wolf was completely healthy. He had no doubt that Hythyr and Hestia would hesitate to offer the poor guy a place in the pack if the wolf required it. The least Cadmon could do was insure that the wolf was physically prepared for whatever responsibilities life had for him.
Then there was the emotional trauma that Cadmon wanted to help the wolf with. For once, the black ALyxian was thankful for his abusive past. At least it put him on the same footing with this wolf. The words of the foreigner still rang in Cadmon's head. "Please don't take me back," he had said. Between that phrase and the scars on the wolf's pelt, Cadmon was sure that the wolf had been in an abusive situation. The thought of such a thing befalling that wolf made Cadmon want to gag, but the Alyxian was at least happy he might be able to help this wolf with whatever he needed.
He had just finished tidying up the Thyme. He turned his head to call to his patient. "Come on in. I just needed to arrange some herbs and tidy the bedding. It should be comfortable for you now." He moved out of the way to allow the wolf in. "I just want to make sure your completely healthy. My name's Cadmon by the way."

An eyebrow arched on Cadmon's brow when he heard the wolf introduce himself at first. It sounded like a name mix up to the Alyxian. Maybe the wolf was called something that started with a "Lar-" in the past, but now his name was Zero. Cadmon couldn't help but be mentally concerned for the name choice. It sounded like an alias the wolf gave himself, and it seemed like an alias that implied worthlessness. There might be another reason why the wolf might have chosen Zero, but Cadmon decided it was best to drive out any feeling of worthlessness Zero's tormentors had beaten into him. But Cadmon found it best not to ask after the whole name thing. That was a conversation for another time. "Don't be afraid to lie down," Cadmon told Zero when he noticed the injured wolf was sitting up. It was so surreal to see Zero like this. Cadmon remembered when he was like Zero. He had just escaped from his own pack after witnessing the horrors Froach had unleashed in Cadmon's world. The warriors of the pack had beaten Cadmon near death and had done similarly with his love, Trocaire. Cadmon had come to Torva scarred and scrawny with the belief that Trocaire was dead. Now his scars were simply a part of his look, Trocaire was in Torva and alive, and muscles from his combat training were visible underneath Cadmon's pelt. He had certainly come a long way since meeting Hythyr. The herbalist remembered what drove him to train to become a warrior. He wanted stop what had happened to him back at his own pack. He hadn't been able to stop what had happened to Zero, but he still could help the poor wolf.
He saw Zero's blue eyes fix on the stash of herbs Cadmon had in his den. He saw the black wolf mutter the names of each herb and the purposes they had. Cadmon's eyebrows went up in discovery of this new wolf's talent. "Impressive. You could make a great herbalist someday." He indicated to a branch with a few leaves and flowers on it. "If you want, I have some thyme right here. It always helps calm me down when I'm anxious." The Alyxian herbalist was pleased to find that his collection of thyme was well stocked. When he had first joined Alyxio, Cadmon had gone through a whole stack every couple days due to his high stress levels. Now he barely needed it. He assumed that this wolf might need it to help calm down. "I'm gonna need to check your wounds, so you might want some just to make it easier." He dropped some of the herb in front of Zero.
Cadmon kept his movements calm and slow as he approached his patient. He didn't want to startle the wolf into shock. He noticed a nasty looking gash in the wolf's shoulder. "Ach! That gash on your shoulder looks like it might be getting infected. Fortunately it's just your shoulder so it shouldn't have complicated anything thus far. You just need some yarrow for it. Also there's a bit of a gash on your neck that isn't healing how I would like. I would continue to put some horsetail on it if I were you. It should heal up nicely. I also have some willow bark if you want to chew on that for a bit." Cadmon brought out all the proposed herbs and put them in front of Zero. He indicated toward the flowers. "Just put the Yarrow right there on your shoulder and that should help with the infection. I don't know if you can reach your neck yourself, but you need horsetail on it. Do you mind if I apply it?" The Alyxian knew it was best if he asked Zero before approaching the wolf's neck. It would be back if Cadmon approached any wounds without asked, and it would be worse for Zero's mental state if he came anywhere near the neck wound.
"So, Zero," Cadmon began, hoping to start a friendly conversation to get the wolf comfortable. "I see you are a genius with herbs. Is there anything else you are interested in?" Cadmon wanted to help Zero out mentally, but he knew his efforts would be useless if he just blatantly confronted Zero about his problems. It was better that he just wait until the wolf was ready to talk.

Zero listened to the wolf and nodded with each of his questions, he didn’t mind him touching his neck, if he killed zero it would be okay with him. Zero had no reason to live, or did he? He remembered his past…his real past. And the promise he made, he could still hear his mother voice as she spoke her final breaths. “No one, can ever…know who you are, promise me, you will never reveal yourself.” Zero accepted this promise, he had no choice to. Zero took the herbs and put them on his wounds, zero knew he would flinch once cadmon touched his neck, he always did. But he tried not to think about it; instead he focused on the question. Zero was kind of surprised when he called him a genius, somewhat coughed as he did, but he averted his attention to the one about his interest, zero had many interest. Singing, But that was kind of personal. Zero looked at the male and spoke kind of shyly. “Um…I can make things, and I’m good with my paws.” He said looking around the den making sure there were no poisons he needed to be aware of, he was an herbalist after all, never knew when a quick escape was needed. He looked back at the entrance and zoned out for a second.

Cadmon noted that he was allowed to apply the horsetail to Zero's neck. The wound was quite serious and appeared to be untouched by any sort of poultice. This didn't surprise the black herbalist. Zero wouldn't have been able to reach the wound to apply any poultice, and he didn't think the she-wolf they saw earlier had caught it. Cadmon made sure he was careful and calm in his actions as he took up some horsetail and chewed it up. He remained in Zero's sight for as long as possible, before he applied the horsetail to the neck wound. When he was done, he backed away a good distance to insure the wolf he meant no harm. "All right. That should help. For the most part I think your wounds have been coated well enough. Those are the worst ones, but we seemed to have covered the others well enough," he replied with a smile. "Is there any other pain besides your wounds? You feel any painful soreness anywhere?" He noted the untouched willow bark. Cadmon couldn't help but smile a bit in amusement. There were always some wolves that didn't want to touch the willow bark. "I know it doesn't look like much, but it does really help numb the pain. But you have to eat it though. Some wolves try to put it on their wounds, but it only encourages infection."
At this point, Cadmon just settled down in front of Zero. Doctor Cadmon had done his job, now it was time for Therapist Cadmon. He noted how Zero's eyes kept darted around the room, scanning for any dangers. "There isn't anything that can hurt your here. I promise," Cadmon said. "I'm probably the last wolf that would hurt a wounded fellow." Cadmon gave a dry humorless chuckle. This situation both infuriated and perplexed the Alyxian. He hated what had been done to Zero, but he was also amazed at how Zero, the mirror image of Cadmon months before, had landed in Cadmon's den. It was astounding.
The herbalist smiled when Zero said he made things with his paws. "Really? What kind of things? I've only ever been good with herbs, and well, I've recently gotten better at fighting. That's an interesting story. If you would like to hear it." A small twitch of hesitation played at Cadmon's heart, but the black wolf shoved it away. If he wanted Zero to open up about his problems, he would have to open up himself.

Zero looked at the bark and sighed, he knew what it was and what it did; he just didn’t want to eat it at the moment, he looked at the wolf but did not smile, he never felt comfortable smiling, most likely never will. Zero listened as he went on about nothing was going to hurt him, but he doubted it things had a strange way of hurting him, zero looked at the ground and though of the beatings from his past, he shook it off when cadmon asked what kinds of things zero made, zero thought of this for a moment and as he prepared to speak he continued and asked if zero wanted to hear his story, he nodded a bit. “I can make armors and weapons.” He said hesitantly, he never told anyone that before. He wasn’t sure how he would take it. “And other objects” he finished.

Cadmon noticed how Zero zoned out. The expression on the wolf's face seemed so familiar to Cadmon in the most surreal way. The herbalist only knew it, because he had bore the same expression so many times before. It was one of reminiscing and recollection. Cadmon remembered how Hythyr had bark at him in their training session in order to get Cadmon's head back into fighting and out of the past. This wolf shared that quality with the Cadmon that had trained with Hythyr so long ago. Then Zero answered Cadmon's question. The Alyxian's eyebrows shot up. "Weapons and armor? I've never heard of any wolf making such things. You must have some great talent."
He saw how Zero had nodded at Cadmon's offer to tell him his bit. Cadmon paused for a moment, and then took a deep breath and began his tale. "My old pack wasn't so great to me. I was the omega, and the warriors there found that to be good enough reason to beat me near to death when they wanted to. While I was at that pack, however, I got close to one of the herbalists there." A smile came across Cadmon's maw. "I swear, she's one of the best things that happened to me. She's here, too, if you ever want to meet her. She taught me what I know about herbs. I was beaten so often, I needed to know how to heal myself." The smile faded as Cadmon reached the next leg of his story. "But a cruel wolf ruled the pack. He had already taken out my parents and aimed to do the same to the herbalist I fell in love with. He..." This part always stuck in Cadmon's throat when he retold it, but like most other times, the herbalist forced it out and off his tongue. "He ordered her to be beaten to death, and I had to watch. I remembered trying to run to her, but the alpha himself pinned me down. After, I was dragged away and beaten for the last time. I assumed her to be dead and left the pack." He got up calmly to allow Zero a better look at his scars. "I got most of these scars from living in that pack, but I swear it would have been worse if I hadn't have met my sunshine herbalist." It was always a joy for Cadmon to talk about how Trocaire had help him get through the tough times in the pack. She really was his bit of sunshine. But now there was the idea that he had left her to suffer there. Though he had thought she was dead, the guilt stuck with him and ripped holes into his heart.
But he couldn't let Zero see that. He continued to tell about his entrance into Torva. "I fled East. I wasn't really looking for any place or anyone, I just wanted to get away. And that's how I found myself in Torva. It was hard coming here at first. I met a lot of wolves that wanted to help me, but I wouldn't let them. I was hurting too much, and I felt too weak about what had happened to me and the people I loved. It wasn't until I met Hythyr that I managed to pull myself together." He smirked a bit at the irony of his encounter with his alpha. "He wasn't the Virtuoso of Alyxio back then, but he was a warrior. As you can guess, I wasn't too fond of warrior wolves, due to what they had done to me in the past. I actually snapped at him when we first met. Then I heard his story, and I realized that he was like me in some ways. We had both lost our family by some form of destruction we were too weak to stop. He found me again when I was breaking down. I poured out what had happened to me, and he offered to help me get stronger. I was so infuriated at my weakness back then. I was helpless in defending myself, my mother, or the wolf I loved. When, Hythyr heard this, he taught me how to be a warrior, and I taught him what I knew about herbs. It's ironic, I know. I was beaten and tormented by warriors, and now I'm learning to become one." Then he realized what he said, and quickly worked to amend it. "But not like the cowardly bastards those wolves were. They weren't true warriors. When I learned how to be a warrior, or a champion in Alyxio terms, from Hythyr, I made a conscious decision that I would be the warrior that those wolves never were and never could be. I wanted to work to make myself the defender of others. I still do, and I'm still working to become that. I suppose I'll always work to become that."
The Alyxian looked up at Zero. The herbalist's story was now out in front of Zero, and it exposed Cadmon for what he was. Cadmon didn't know how Zero would take it, but he knew that he needed to tell Zero this nonetheless. It didn't matter if Zero told his story or not. All that mattered was that Zero knew that there was a way to build up in this world. Cadmon had been knocked down three times by fate, and he was still standing. The Alyxian wanted to give Zero evidence that someone can always stand up after the fray, no matter what horrors they had beheld. "I'm not going to ask about what happened, but as you can see, I have a good guess that you and I aren't so different. You're free to ask me whatever you'd like and tell me whatever you'd like. I won't judge you. I've been there, and I'm back. But no matter what you choose to do with what I've told you, know this: you can always build yourself up; no matter what has happened." And Cadmon was honest about this. The horrors he had seen had been enough to rip his heart to shreds, but still he had sewn himself back up and stood against fate.

zero listened, with a full ear and he listened well. For it represented much about him as well. Zero knew what it was like, and he knew much more. Blackfire was beaten for many reasons, mostly because he was the blood of the royal family. But that life was to be concealed at all times, zero looked to the ground as he soon pieced together why the wolf cadmon was telling him this, and soon enough he asked him about his own past. Zero sighed; he then began about his past. At least… a very small fragment of it. Zero looked out of the den and began. “My story is similar.” Zero began. “My real name…is zero Blackfire, my origins, begin in a pack not far from these lands.” He said looking to the ground. I was born and raised as a slave, a tool of abuse and many other things.” This was not hard for him to talk about because he no longer had emotions; he seemed so dead inside whenever he spoke about it. But he continued anyways. “I was raised by my parents until they were slaughtered soon after I was weaned, as were my brothers and sisters. I was young but I knew what was happing, but I didn’t know why.” He paused again and blinked. “After that I was used only as a tool of abuse, the wolves there practiced their fighting moves on me, tested fire on me, and tortured me because it was fun.” He said with no real emotion in his voice. “this happened as I grew up and I was too expect torture every day as a routine, but it wasn’t all bad, but when they.” He paused for a while as he looked outside of the den. “when they decided to make our death a sport, well…things got messy, slaves were put against one another and forced to fight to the death for the amusement and the beatings of the pack.” He looked down at his scars. “And it seemed I was their best bet, because I always won.” I was forced to kill my own friends simply because everyone knew I was a good bet. But when they faced me against zerea,” he paused at the memory of her, she was his best friend. But she was gone now. “I refused to fight…and so did she. Furious the alpha took as both and beat us side by side. We looked into each other’s eyes as they did, telling each other to hold on. But…” tears now came down zeros eyes with no way of stopping them. “I saw her eyes go dim as the severed her head from her body. Seeing as she was a distraction from my work they decided to get rid of her. And with her death, mine soon followed.”
Zero ducked his head down still crying. “after that I decided it was time I thought myself how to heal, it took a while but I soon figured it all out and treated my own wounds, but the soldiers didn’t like this idea and as punishment they didn’t hurt me, they went for the other slaves. The males were tortured slowly to death, and the females were raped and then killed off. After this they averted their attention to me and did the same…” there was a pause. “Tried to anyways. Before they could deliver my death blow I killed the alpha and his betas and ran, ran as far as my legs could carry me, and it was in one week of none stop running I reached trova, and Alyxio.” He looked at the wolf now in full out tears, his voice now broken. “ every time I close my eyes all I see are the blood and severed bodies, every time there is silence all I hear are their screams.” He said trembling from the flashback of his past.

The fire the brewed Cadmon's thirst for justice. This was the reason why he trained so hard to be a warrior. He wanted to stop this, stop this cruelty in wolves. There were too many stories like his. Trocaire had undergone similar torments after he left his pack. She and all of the other females there had been beaten and raped continually. Cadmon felt the fire in him burn to stop this. He was only halfway there. Becoming a herbalist would help some wolves, but Cadmon didn't want to just clean up, he wanted to stop the problem in its first steps. And he could only do that as a warrior, as the Champion of Alyxion.
He tried hard to keep down his inner fury, but it was so hard to do so. He felt his jaw tense and his paws scratch at the ground. His hackles raised as if preparing himself for a battle against Zero's tormentors. The hardest part about Zero's story was when he said he was forced to fight and kill other wolves in his position. He refuse to kill his best friend and because of that, she died right in front of Zero. He wasn't as fortunate as Cadmon. Trocaire had survived and found Cadmon. The same hadn't happened for Zero. Since the death of his friend, Zero had to witness the suffering of so many other wolves. Cadmon grimaced at the thought of such torture. No wonder the wolf was so frightened. His mind was probably in tatters by now. Cadmon would have to work hard to heal such tatters.
Cadmon sighed to let out some of his fury. "That sounds... awful. It must've been awful. Sounds like your pack is my pack if it had continued a few years longer. Trocaire, my girlfriend I guess you could say, helped bring it down with her sister after I left. But Zero, you have to understand that you can still build yourself up from this. All the horrors and things that you saw and experienced, it doesn't have to be like that. Alyxio has been my safe haven for months now. Hythyr would rather die than see it fall to the clutches of the evil we've seen. I know you won't believe that now, but just watch and give everything a chance. If you stay here, we can protect you. No harm will come to you here. And I promise, we will help you build a better life here. They did for me. You don't have to let your past shape you anymore."
He remembered Hythyr saying similar words to him back in the woods. Then Cadmon had been terrified of the power of fate, and its ability to knock him down. He was still afraid of that in some respects, but that fear just drove his determination to make him stronger. "Is there anything else you need?" he asked.

zero stopped crying and put on a look he hadn't made in years, the slave listened to cadmons words and nodded at them. cadmon asked if there was anything else he needed, zero stood up and looked at the wolf. "no...i don't feel any pain. just a heartache" zero said looking at candom and back at the herbs, "i just don't know what to do now. this new place, maybe ill just, go stare at a wall. only thing Ive ever done anyways." zero said as he began to walk out of the den, he would just go and stare at something until he fell asleep. zero did like this wolf though, he kind of wanted to stay and talk. but he figured he was busy. zero would be no burden to him any longer. he stopped as he began to exit the den. "thanks candom, i wont be a burden to you anymore." zero said limping out of the den.

It hurt to see the Zero cry. Cadmon felt his heart throb with sympathy as he remembered his past breakdowns. Zero stopped crying and told Cadmon he would stare at a wall. "Well that's kinda boring," Cadmon said, trying to lighten the mood. "I personally go to the willow pond to clear out my thoughts. It's a long ways away from here, but it does help my head when I run there. I don't think a wall's gonna help you."
When he saw the wolf get up he got up with him. "You know you can stay here. I'd rather you stay for a bit, I need to make sure your wounds don't cause you any trouble. It'd be far better for you to stay here overnight." Cadmon understood the wolf's need to be alone and settle his thoughts, but the Alyxian still wanted to make sure Zero was mentally stable and his wounds didn't cause any problems. When the wolf continued to get up, Cadmon followed him and got in front of the wolf. "I'm sorry, but I need to make sure your okay, before I let you leave. If you want I can leave the den and you can have some time alone with your thoughts for a bit. But I have nothing to do, but make sure you get better. I have some thyme in there that can help you sleep. If you want to talk I'm here to talk. And my name's Cadmon, not Candom, but don't worry. It's a bit confusing." He gestured inside. He figured that Zero might think he was trying to hold him there just to keep him prisoner. "Just please understand I'm not trying to keep you prisoner. I just want to make sure you stay safe and healthy. Both mentally and physically." He stood and waited for Zero to go into the den.

Zero listened to the wolf as he continued to walk out but cadmon move in front of him, this scared the living hell out of him, whenever someone got in front of zero the way he did they beat him near to death, and they did this three times a day. Zero’s ears shot down and his tail was all the way beneath his legs in total and utter fear, zero turned around in a hurry and padded back to the spot like a scared pup, as he did his eyes were wide with anticipation of a beating. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean it!” he said lying in the spot and burring his head beneath his paws. “i wont do it again". He stopped and just remained silent as he looked at the wolf.

Now Cadmon just wanted to pound his head into the ground. Not only had he put a dent into his love life, but now he had terrified his traumatized patient. He just kept on messing up. He really didn't mean to look threatening to the wolf. He was just following his duties as a herbalist. He couldn't just let Zero walk around with his wounds. Sure they were covered with herbs, but the more exertion he put on himself, the more danger of blood loss he'd be in. Furthermore, Cadmon wanted to get a better look at Zero's mental health. Now he had probably sent Zero backwards in his mental recovery. As soon as the wolf saw Cadmon, he darted back into the den and cringed into the nest, terrified. Cadmon just felt fortunate that Zero didn't try to rip his nose off.
"Sorry! Sorry!" Cadmon kept himself low and assumed somewhat of a submissive stance. It wasn't completely submissive due to the fact that Cadmon was simply trying to get across the idea that he had no desire to seek power over him. "I should not have done that. My bad." He approached Zero but stopped a good six feet away. He did not want to frighten Zero further. "I'm just going to sit right here. I can't touch you from here. I just want to observe you to make sure you're all right." He settled down in front of the frightened wolf. Dangit! he thought. He couldn't believe he made such a stupid mistake. "Are you comfortable with this?" he asked so to make sure Zero was comfortable with this.

Zero sat there slowly getting better, but he was still watching cadmon. Zero was petrified for a moment. He watched as cadmon apologized and put his body language in a form that made him look less threatening. Cadmon then walked closer and laid down saying he was just going to observe zero. Zero nodded as a reply to yes, after a few moment zero grew bored and began to hum. The humming soon morphed into a song that was once sang to him. the family lullaby. As he did his heart broke with the memory of them, and the way his kingdom fell. the darsha lullabye (click)

Cadmon was relieved when he saw that his patient was not in a state of panic by his presence. "If you need anything just ask. I haven't had a patient in a long time. Actually the last time I had a patient was..." His mind went back to the time that peculiar virus struck Naruna beach, he vaguely remembered it, but he recalled that it had affected many of the wolves there and he had to work on a cure for them. He didn't quite recall how he had done it, but he knew he did. He assumed his headache was so bad that he had trouble remembering what had happened. He chuckled to himself over the bewilderment of it. "Nevermind. That was a very interesting time."
He heard Zero break into a hum. The melody was hopeful, despite the wolf's dark past. It must've been what kept Zero going all this time. Cadmon only wished he had some song from his mother. Though, his dreams served to be comfort enough. He recalled how his mother had assumed the form of stars and crashed down, eviscerating the chains that bound him in his dreams. He still had dreams like that, but now they weren't as terrifying because the chains on him had grown weaker, and the stars had grown warmer. Now the dreams were nothing to be afraid of. He just hoped Zero had the same comforts from his song.
Then the name puzzled him: Zero. "If I may ask... How come your name is Zero? It's an interesting name, and I'm just curious that's all. If you don't want to talk about it, that's fine."
