There is no end to how cold it is getting, and there is only more winter to come! With the cold season comes extremes of ice and snow that can be painfully sharp on the paws in the north, even for the thickest pelts. Snow has been spotted in even the southern region's woodland cliffs and marshes.

How do you know that you can.....trust me...

Soft paws glided across fresh snow. Swift trotting began to slow down. Her tracks were deep in the snow but neat and barely noticeable. Her smooth velvet pads needed warming for she feared frost-bite. Luminous silver clouds surrendered the moon and stars. Dark violet, Navy blue and black sky hid the mountains. A cold wind swept across the frozen grasslands, chilling Fireheart to the bone. "Bye my Marrow! I've never been this cold! Nor this hungry!" She moaned silently. She stood elegantly, her head tipped back, Her fiery orange eyes grew to a gentle amber, she gazed at silverpelt, a long and wide chain of stars, clustered together. Also known as Valhalla. Or if you prefer-Heaven. As the moon glowed, the light bounced of the snow, creating gentle coloures which shone in the corners of her eyes. opening her vocal chords. She howled."Demetrius wolves! Those who are hungry! Those who have energy! Come to me! Tonight we must hunt! Tonight we will be going to sleep in our dens with full bellies!"

stretching her legs, she waited, her tail gently flicking back and forth. Her nose twitched. Her ears flicked. A scent wafted towards her, luckily, the breeze went towards her while her own scent was being pushed away from the fresh scent.Caribou! Oh delicious! I haven't had Caribou since last Green-leaf! She licked her chops tastly, She could already imagine the metallic tast of Caribou blood over her tongue. While she anxiously pummelled the smooth snow with her paws, wondering who would come and join her pack hunt. Hopefully Athena herself would come.

"She speaks." She thinks. She does. Attacks: none Injuries: none Defences: none

Aurora hadn't had much luck in hunting that evening. She had found a snowshoe hare, but it had reached the safety of it's den before she could each it. Now, annoyed and grumpy, she lapped water from one of the dozen half-frozen puddles in the grasslands. A howl caused her to prick her ears and raise her head. Curious (and hungry) she heeded the call and trotted in the direction of it.

When she reached the source of the howl, she saw it was Fireheart, one of the wolves who had helped rescue her. "Evenin'." said Aurora, greeting Fireheart with a dip of her head. "What are we hunting?" She paused to stretch, loosening up her legs and back for a run. If they were hunting as a pack, that usually meant they were going after something big and/or/fast.

IT'S ALWAYS THE HALOS
AND THE WINGS THAT KEEP YOU BLIND

Athena had had some time to rest, but the pulsating pain in her shredded ear hadn't really subsided. It seemed to come and go according to the amount of wind that fluttered through it, but all in all, the cold only seemed to make it feel as if the very snow were creeping inside her veins through her wounds.

A howl caught her attention from her sentry post and her one remaining ear flicked in that direction. Her feet followed, making their way down the mountain and across the plains, where two of her soldiers were gathered. She studied the scene for clues, and then the background, and finally replayed the howl in her mind. "Good work.", her voice sounding like a splintering mushy log that a circus of toads performed on.

"You lead.", she gestured to Fireheart. It was only fair, as he had called them together in the first place. But if it wasn't for her ear and rumbling stomach, she would have led herself. Athena didn't quite feel very well.

How do you know that you can.....trust me...

Fireheart's eyes glimmered at the sight of Aurora pacing towards her, asking what they were going to hunt. Then, Athena showed up and said she could lead. She turned her head and he nose twitched. Trying to decifer the scent exactly. She grinned."Caribou, an old buck by the smell of it. He's leading his herd south towards warmer humidity. What they are still doing here in the time of the FrostMoon I don't know."She said with a flick of her ears. Her tail still flicking, She angled her ears toward the arriving herd. Bye the sound of their tendons going 'tock-tock' she guessed they were slowing down. Probably to eat the last of the Lichen poking out of the fresh snow. Dipping her head politely to Athena and Aurora, she stood up and marched ahead. Speeding up to press-paw speed, she glided over the snow, her nose sniffing the ground. Occasionally lifting her head up, either to see if the others were keeping pace or to scent the wind. Every so-often she stretched her maw open to tast the air, something she'd seen cats do and had never tried herself. Any others who wish to hunt would have to come now while Fireheart was in a good mood.

"We are getting close, I smell the buck. Now, on my command-but first, heed these instructions. No-one must speak in a Byrrgis. Or what you call a pack hunt. It is all given through body language. You Torvan hunt differently from where I come from. I there anyone else who have come to hunt and not yet made themselves known?" Fire barked silently to the two who followed. Is anyone else coming to hunt? Is it just me, Athena and Aurora?turning away again, still pricking her ears for an answer, Fire continued to pad towards the Herd, planning an ambush. There is plenty of foliage over there, near the last of the Lichen. Perhaps where the Caribou will go. We will hide, then spring on the old buck, He will be totally unprepared! This is going to be a long chase!Unless something goes wrong.Trotting up from press-paw speed to a half hearted sprint-for her left shoulder slightly hurt-she ran, her tail flicking. Indicating the the others do the same. Twilight was darkening to night, throwing the hunters into dark shadow and pale snow. Minutes passed but felt like hours to Fireheart. Finally, she stopped, a wide-yet small, half-frozen pond stood in their wake. Lots of trees and bushes provided excellent cover for what Fireheart needed to do for the hunt. Once again she turned to look at them, but not quite seeing them properly, she couldn't tell if other wolves had come to hunt or not."Lichen grows here, Caribou love Lichen. Stay under cover and wait for my command, remember I hunt differently from you so the signals I give are through body language."

"She speaks." She thinks. She does.

Aurora

Aurora licked her chops at the mention of caribou, a treat she hadn't tasted since her travels in Alaska. "Perhaps they were far to the north when the urge to migrate took them." she said in reply to Fireheart's musings. "I just hope they can make it to their destination before the passes to here seal up with snow. It would be a waste of meat, not to mention life, if they starved in the mountains." She lifted her nose to smell the air, going over what scents she could catch. Many females, the old buck, and several younger ones. I wonder which will take the buck's role when we bring him down? She looked around, trying to visualize their hunt. The ground is so soggy it will be hard to keep our footing, and there doesn't appear to be much cover. We'll be in for a run.

She raised her head and pricked her ears as Athena joined them. "Welcome, Leader!" she called, flicking her ears down in respect. "Are your injuries healing up?" Her own were nearly healed, the only pain a slight soreness. She privately wondered how such an old wolf could still hunt, but hey, a hunt wasn't all about running and biting, was it? Tactics and leadership mattered. Although Athena seemed content to allow Fireheart to take the role this time. Aurora turned her gaze on Fireheart, dubbing her worthy of the honor. She was a strong, competent wolf.

Aurora nodded her head as Fireheart told them to speak with body language on the hunt. "I'm used to hunting that way." she said. "We hunted that way in my birth pack." Heeding her orders, she began to move, sliding across the ground towards the cover near the pond. Her grey fur, normally in contrast with the snow, was masked by the night. Only her green eyes could be seen. She slunk under the trees, watching the caribou herd. They had begun to take notice of the smell in the air, but were unable to tell if there was a hunting pack nearby or wolves simply passing through. Aurora always made it a point to relax her posture when she was near prey and not hunting, but now she was all business.

"She speaks." She thinks. She does.

They were running very late, as winter had already begun. Drolin had to rush his herd, unfortunately. They hadn't migrated late, the buck in lead had needed to slow the speed, and he was quite worried that this year would be his last as leader. The young men were already looking at him in distaste, even though they were too young to take over. For now. Next year they would though, or maybe some stray male, either way, he was a bit old for this. The most likely one to take his place was his son, Ralph. He was a fit young man, and Drolin knew he would lead well. He just didn't want to give up his position in the herd. Of course, he was growing old and slow, he couldn't keep up with the speed of the younger ones like he used to, and it was a sad truth that his time was coming to an end.

The scent of wolves reached his nostrils, but they were distant. His nose wasn't as sensitive as it used to be, either, and he questioned it's reliability. Yet, the old buck pushed this thought away as he lead his herd closer to the awaiting wolves. They still smelled so distant to him, so he decided that they were only passing by. Obviously, his senses had betrayed him, but he didn't know that. Tired legs carried him forward in the snowy grassland, he wanted to stop again to rest, but his herd was not likely to last if he did. already, they were starving, ribs visible on their flanks, and it was probably worse for the old man. He felt pretty sure that he was near collapsing because of lack of food, yet the other, younger Elk could go on if he fell right then and there. The only thing that kept him going forwards was his lust for life. Drolin would not give in so easily.

IT'S ALWAYS THE HALOS
AND THE WINGS THAT KEEP YOU BLIND

Fireheart did indeed take the reigns, and Athena followed her commands with the least amount of energy possible. The woman seemed to know more about Elk than Athena had thought, perhaps even more than she did. Athena gave a grimace in response to Aurora's question and took mental notes on Aurora's injuries. They seemed to be healing up, if not well and dandy. Now that Aurora was on the mend, would it be time to attack again? Or be attacked, as Nix'Rio had surely healed up as well?

But at the suggestion to use body language, she felt dumbfounded. Perhaps she had known how to speak this way at one time, but her length of stay at Torva had dulled that ability, just as she no longer knew Latin, as she once did when she had arrived. They appeared to exchange thoughts in this language, but what they were, Athena didn't know. Trying to go with the flow, she pretended to be caught up in the hunt.

THUD A soft sound echoed in the grasses where Athena's paw had penetrated through a disguised pothole, her paw hitting the de-elivated ground beneath it at an akward angle. Pain shot through her muscles, and the top of her body disappeared from among the grasses. Collapsed on the ground while the others made their way forwards, the most unfortunate of transformations took place.

Athena lifted her paw out of the hole and gazed at it, rolling onto her belly to look. "One cloud, two clouds...", she whispered, gently raising and lowered her other paw to indicate white against the sky, while holding her injured paw to her chest. "Bad paw, ssssh, stop speaking so loudly.", she looked at it for a moment and then resumed her skyward gaze. "Three cloud, sky mushroom, unicrawn...", she continued to breathe.

Aurora

Aurora blinked in surprise as she realized they were stalking elk, not caribou. They certainly looked similar in the night. Ah well, it made no difference to her. Unconsciously, a smile made its way across her muzzle. This brought her back to her days in Yellowstone, chasing elk up and down the slopes of Amethyst Mountain and through the pastures of Slough Creek, first with her family and then with Hawk, the one wolf whose easygoing ways and infectious smile had been able to reach past her sarcastic outer layers and bring out the kind and sweethearted wolf underneath.

She snapped herself back to the present. They had hunting to do. She glanced at where Fireheart was, but a noise distracted her. She turned her head to see Athena belly-up counting clouds. "What the-" was all she managed to say. Eyup. Looks like she had finally gone senile. Resisting the urge to bite her head off, Aurora signaled that she was about to change position to Fireheart and slunk over to Athena. "Athena, ma'am? May I ask what in the bloody hell you're doing? We're on a hunt, and you're playing 'let's pretend' with clouds!" Her voice was a mixture between a whisper and a shout. Hopefully, the elk would not be alerted until she could get Athena functioning again. She made a mental note to check on her later, to find out if she had some sort of mental problem. Right now she just hoped she could get her on her feet before the elk noticed one very odd-acting wolf next to one very confused wolf.

"She speaks." She thinks. She does.

Skyrals paws pounded against the the hard, sharp packed snow. She was new to the Demetrius pack and ready to prove her self worthy. She had heard Osiris howl and was coming to answer it. The pack had probably, already started hunting and she was certian she was late. she put on an extra spurt of energy in her run.
Streaking through the trees, a black and silver bolt of pure Timber wolf with her long tail gliding out behind her like a smooth black, silver tipped river, she dodged past a clump of chervil, protected by a stubborn, prickly juniper bush, she made a mental reminder of where it was located. "Chervil,"she murmered to herself",will help stop inflamation in cuts or sprains".
Skylar emerged from the snow bound onto the grassy plains. Stopping to scent the air ,she caught a whiff of her pack mates and also... is that a herd of... is that elk?
Something started crawling out of the deepest, darkest forest in her mind world. An image of terrifying brutality that her old pack had done to maimed wolves or pups, useless Grythum, as they were called back then. The image wormed its way to her minds eye and she squeezed her real eyes shut.
'Poor Fritx, he had a broken leg from a fall down a cliff. she could have easily healed it but Velcor said that he had no time for weaklings. He had spat that word out, right in poor, poor Fritxs face. Then he had snapped his other front leg in his jaws, dragged poor Fritx down into a canyon and then caused a stampede of caribou to kill Fritx. After the stampede he kicked the body and turned to walk away saying out loud "useless mutt killed by food.HA!"

Skyral opened her eyes and stalked the rest of the way to the hunting pack. Aurora acknowledged her presence with a shallow dip of her head, then turned to Osiris and Athena.Athena was holding her front paw to her chest and muttering somthing to the sky while Osiris asked her what she was doing. Skylar crawled over to Osiris and Athena
"Athena ma'am"She asked "are you okay?"
When Athena didn't answer, she gave Osiris a puzzled look but was only ignored.
"Athena,"she asked again",if you have hurt your paw I can put Chervil on it if you have sprained it?"
Skyral looked towards the elk ,some of them were starting to scent the air.
'Great Lupus!' she thought 'If they smell us it will be bye bye dinner!'"what do we do" she asked Osiris "what will we do?"

WHATCH OUT THERE'S SWEARING! OH NO!!! -gasp- lol ^^ no, seriously, there is swearing which you better watch out for, so yeah, just warning you before you read. ^+^

OOC: Whoop, I don't think Osiris is too happy with Athena. ^+^ anyway Xexes when Osiris whispers to Skyral can you not make your character eavesdrop please? Because that's not what I want intended to happen in thread okay?

The Caribou's ears flicked and their noses twitched. They then began to trot away into the dark shadows. A sharp thud made her whirl around. She grimaced in rage as she saw Athena flopped on her back with her paw to her chest, clucking things about unicorns and mushrooms. She snapped her fangs impatiantly. Posing in a defensive and dominant pose, she stalked over the Athena. Suddenly, out of the shadows crept the newest pack member, Skyral. She raised her head. Interrupting Skyral's hurried, nervous speech. "Taine tec marac tae Wolfsmoon!(Silence Wolfsmoon!) it's about the you showed up!" She snapped impatiantly at Skyral. At the back of her mind she instantly felt bad but she shoved this away. A loud huffing noise sounded not far off. It was a herd of Elk. Fireheart's spirits raised again, but only by a little. She snorted as she stood over Athena. She glare down a the old and absolutely bonkers Alpha. She huffed again. She opened her maw slightly. A trait she had earned from being trained as pack Beta and disciplinarian, but she wasn't in that pack anymore. So she closed her mouth again. Her tail raised in annoyance, she made a strange, gutturale noise in the back of her throat. It was almost half-way between a growl and a warning snap. Her orange eyes blazed. She may have been a lower rank than Athena but she wasn't going to tolerate insolence and idiocracy on her pack hunt. Finally, she turned to the others, forgetting to use body language,(frankly she couldn't give a caribou scat) she growled at the others, her voice dangerously soft. Her voice was being injected with venom, fuelled bye her anger.

"Move out! I want a full stomach in all of us before we sleep in our dens tonight! And you! -She turned viciously to Athena who was still clucking like a chicken, crooning about completely irrelevant things-"Get up! Because of this irrelevant behaviour!(I don't care what rank you are!) You are packing back! Only making small attacks and leaving the most needed attacks to everyone else! And frankly I don't think you are up to the hunt with your fucking paw!Why does she have to be so fucking bonkers!she swore even in her thoughts, it was the first time she had truly swore in the Torvan language. She bared her teeth in a grimace. Her nostrils flared. Lashing her tail and her hackles raised she stalked over to the main attack point, signalling to the others to assume positions, first, she told Aurora that due to her decently sharp fangs she would be attack second, Skyral Would attack third. While, of course Athena would brings up the rear, flanking them and giving back up and extra bulk. Skyral would feint the Elk, attempting to separate the young from the old and Athena would assist. While She and Aurora would take after the main target, the old buck who was leading the herd. Once the herd fully separated, Skyral and Athena would charge after Fire and Aurora, flanking them and providing extra attacks. Still angry and huffing every so often, she silently glided forward, her paws sliding across the moss, indicating the others to do the same instead of paws lifting up and thudding on the ground. She stilled her tail and made her fur lie flat. She even quitened her huffing. Telling the others to be quite for she thought she heard muffled talking. Her ears twitching again, she angled her hips and rose her large shoulders. Her muscles tightened. Slowly she crept out of the foliage, indicating the others to follow, she slid quietly towards the newly arrived Elk herd. She wagged her tail, commanding Athena and Skyral to their positions. Angling her ears, she told Aurora to follow close behind. Turning to the others again, she told them to be ready for her signals. She stood up and glided over to Skyral's ear, she whispered."When feinting.....break off after five minutes, acting although you and Athena have lost interest. And make sure she fucking well listens! Im tired of how she acts sometimes! And don't tell her I said that. she muttered quietly to Skyral, glancing around to see if Athena was listening, thankfully, it didn't appear if Athena had heard anything. She highly doubted that Athena had for her tattered ear, not to mention she was close to the end of her life like many wolves at that age. This she wouldn't dream on saying right to Athena's face.

Firehearts growling hadn't dampened Skyral's hunting instinct. Nodding her head slowly and softly ,trying not to disturb the grass too much ,when Fireheart was done whispering in her ear she snuck down to Athena and told her the plan whispering in her good ear. "Now please don not muck this up Athena, the pack needs a success!" Crawling back to her hunting position, she saw Firehearts tail lashing back and forth. 'That could disturb the prey!'. But she kept her mouth shut because with Fire in a mood like that she could well turn out to be the prey if she got something wrong. Turnig the instructions over and over in her head so she would not forget them she glanced at the elk. The old buck was definitley a good target but why where they so late in the migration? Her mind filled with questions Did the old buck get lost? Did the herd get stalled? Was the old buck so old he had forgotten the time they needed to leave from or was it just that the seasons played a trick with him? Oh, if only she could ask the herd! She was so caught up in her own thoughts she reliasied that the hunt had started. When her turn came she exctued her move perfectly. Dropping back she pretended she pretended she had lost intrest and began looking round for Athena. Skyral coud not locate her anywhere. 'That can not be good'She mutters in her head. 'Great lupus please let us get a success for this hunt!' she prayed to her god in her head. Looking up she watched Fireheart and Aurora. The hunt was ON! Aurora

(Skyral, I believe it was Aurora, not Osiris, that got to Athena first...)

Pausing to give Athena a disgusted look and Skyral a slightly contemptuous one, Aurora listened to Fireheart's instructions. She glanced up at the herd again, seeing they were still unalerted. She followed Fireheart, waiting for her signal to attack second. She figured they could start driving the herd, while Skyral kept them going in the right direction with nips and feinting. Even with their leader out, maybe they would still get a meal.

She glanced over at Fireheart, and followed her as they broke into a run. Remembering her role, she attacked second, making straight for the old male. Her teeth closed on air as he ran, but they had the herd on the move. Now, all they had to do was separate him from the others and take him down.

She looked up as Skyral feinted at the elk, pushing the old male farther away from the others. He snorted in alarm and bounded off, surprisingly fast for something his age. Aurora took off in pursuit, her endurance capabilities coming into play as she slowly managed to nudge him further and further away from his herd. Sensing this, he made an attempt to rejoin them, but she snarled and leapt at his muzzle, keeping him moving. She dodging his flailing front hooves, and as he turned and ran, she put on a burst of speed and bit into his flank, using her own bodyweight to slow him. A kick to the side knocked her off, but she kept up the hunt.

(Argh. I am so sorry for the powerplaying/godmodding/failure, but I have no muse and I had to force myself to write this.)

( sorry for mucking every thing up guys but Im just figureing out what to do!^^)

Skyral lunged at the old elk, but keeping a careful eye on his back legs. She had seen Aurora get knocked off her feet by a powerful kick from the old elk and did NOT fancy getting hit with a kick herself. Keeping behind Osiris and Aurora ,she snapped and feinted here and there trying to keep the bull moose away from the rest of the herd and adding in backup nips and snaps at the elks fetlocks to help Aurora and Osiris. The elk was slowing thanks to the bite mark Aurora had managed to put in his flank.Racing beside the bull she caught up to Aurora and managed to lock onto one of his legs. Her jaws clamped shut on his back leg and she felt bones crunch. Skyral felt him slow down. She was in danger of being kicked but she held on tight. then suddenly she was flying her jaws clamped around nothing but air she had been kicked off! Twisting and writhing in the air, desperatley trying to land on her feet ,she thumped down hard on the ground and all of her breath was knocked out of her.she lay winded on the ground. Scrambling to her feet she raced after the bull elk, Aurora and Osiris but she was breathing heavily. The elk was getting further and further away with the other two wolves tailing right behind it. She had to be fast! She stopped running and rested for a few moments trying hard to catch her breath then speed of again. Once she had recovered she dashed off catching up with the others in no time at all and immediatley getting back into her role. The elk was limping slightly and it seemed that she would not miss the kill! Attacks: jaws broke elks leg. Defence: watching the back legs for kicks. Injuries: A bit of brusing and winded

(OOC: Okay everyone, this hunt isn't going so well I'm going to have to call it off. XP I know you wont this but nothing's working at the moment, Xexes has left, and frankly this hunt wasn't set at the right time, especially with Alpha challenges left right and centre. So I hope you'll see it from my point of view, we need to postpone this hunt. I'm not going to bother with a table, I'm just going to write this post from scratch.
Oh, and caution there's swearing.)

She growled at Skyral to keep in line, suddenly she lunged at the Elk, attempting to tear at its side, she roared.her jaws were blood splattered by now. Her eyes blazed angrily. Athena was not in e hunt. Suddenly very angry, she signalled to the others to stop, she stopped also. She turned to the others, not caring."Well? It looks like We've been injuring ourselves, slaving away for one batty mother fucking son of a bitch for an Alpha! She's not even hunting! Even the oldest of Elders in my old pack hunted, she's just leaving it all for us. But of course let's not forget she's a damned scavenger!" She snarled, not bothering to use body language. She barked for the others to fan out and search for as much prey as they could find, then they would bring it back to camp and make a fresh kill pile. Suddenly, she barked at them. "I am sick of this damn rule that no digging is permitted, it's insane! It's not right and it's not wolf! How are to make a cache in the winter? Well I'll tell you how! Gather your prey, I'll be at the camp making a large cache big enough for the prey we find, and for heavens sake don't fail! I myself will be hunting, leave Athena to scrounge for beetles." She snarled, Athena was mad, she had ruined her hunt. If this band were Osiris's own, Athena would have been kicked out. She stalled off, with a flick of her tail she commanded Skyral to follow her. She trotted swiftly to behind a lone tree. She gestured Sky to sit, and she sat also. She gave Skyral a quick word. "Skyral, I can't stand this place. I will be leaving soon, I suggest you do also, this place isn't right! Look at how the first hunt we've had in ages turned out!" She sighed. "I suggest we go to Alyxio. They have a fair ranking system. But of course I highly doubt he Virtuoso would trust me as er....me had a -ahem- skirmish......" her voice traled off. She stood up and began to wander back to the mountains, suddenly she turned to Skyral again. "Go do some hunting, I'll do the cache." She gave Sky one beady glare, her gaze penetrating like fire.
