The Ace felt the cold mountain breeze blow doen to the base as he led Cadmon to the edge of the Alyxian nation. The scarred youth said he wanted to join the pack and the forest warrior couldn't be happier. Hythyr would have been happy to induct him himself as Fanul had given both Hythyr and Hestia the power to bring in new members. However, Cadmon wanted to meet the Alpha himself and the brown warrior understood his hesitation. Cadmon had had a horrible experience in his old pack and though Hythyr knew the Visturo to be trustworthy, the scarred youth would have to meet him in person. Hythyr turned and smiled at his friend before stepping into the border and raising his voice to a howl. "Visturo! Your Ace needs you!" Hythyr was sure that Cadmon would fit in. Not only was he a skilled herbalist, he was also learning the ways of combat from Hythyr. The green orbed fighter turned back to the midnight healer."You don't have to be nervous. Fanul maybe mysterious, but he's a fair man. Just be honest with him and you'll be fine. And don't be shy about your name." Hythyr was a little worried about Cadmon not wanting to give away his name. Hythyr had to earn Cadmon's trust before he even learned the guy's name, so Hythyr wondered if he would be uncomfortable revealing his name to the alpha. He looked back up the mountain as the wind continued to stir his fur. His eyes scanned the white caps for the telltale read of his leader.

Cadmon followed behind Hythyr and listened as the warrior called to the "virtuoso" or the alpha as it was apparently. He felt the cold air bite at his skin. He was going to have to get used to the cold air if he was going to live here. But Cadmon was good at adapting to such things. Often back at his old pack he had been forced to sleep outside and face to cold breeze that stung his skin. If this pack was suitable, he would have no problem adapting. Of course this was assuming this pack was suitable. He still needed to truly meet Fanul in such a way that he would have to give his name. A grimace stretched across Cadmon's face as he considered the idea. He didn't like passing around his name. His name was his identity, which was very personal. Also it was a means to track him down if any malicious wolf got hold of it. But he reasoned that he would have to give it to Fanul if he was to be an Alyxio pack member. However, Fanul would have to earn it to some extent. He had met Fanul at the lake and he seemed to be a decent character, but Cadmon wanted to know how Fanul would react with Cadmon about to join the pack. Then he realized that if he was going to join the pack, he would need to know about the rules. "Hythyr? What're the rules in Alyxio? Do you guys have a purpose? What will I be if I join?" Cadmon made sure Hythyr heard the "if" in his statement, there was no way any of this was a "for sure" thing.

Rarely did his Aces call him, so when he heard Hythyr's voice breach the mountain air, Fanul lifted his head as his ears flicked forward in questioning poise. It was not an urgent call, but time was precious and Fanul began his descent of the Lemures Mountains, walking upon balanced paws, muscles rippling beneath his fiery coat. It was spring now, and most of the snow had melted away, leaving small puddles and trickles of pristine water. And even though the land was drab, life was slowly returning. Small bits of green pushed its way to the surface in an effort to bathe in the sun's lively rays, while birds began to sing their melodies to one another, echoing harmonies among the trees. Even the patterns of the sun changed, rising earlier and departing later.

He moved with grace, one paw in front of the other as he traversed over the land with relative ease. The mountains had toned his legs and allowed him to train in peace, shaping himself into a devastating warrior. The fox might have been smaller than some wolves, but he was of average size, and made sure that he could deliver and dodge blows with what skills he did hone and possess. Smells filled the air, both of them familiar to Fanul. One of them belonged to Hythyr, and the other belonged to a nameless stranger who had neglected to provide his name the last time they had met. A small grin flitted to the fox's lips. Truth be told, he had no intention of meeting the stranger again, nor did he ever think that their paths would once again cross. However, it seemed that fate had other plans for them. That was fine; he would make do with whatever provisions came his way.

He finally arrived where his Ace and the guest were waiting. "Hello, Hythyr; welcome, stranger. You called?" Fanul said, his voice calm and deep and silkily handsome. With a wry look upon his face, he came toward them, stopping a short distance away. Fanul was taller than them because of his position upon the mountain, but other than that, there was little indication of his dominant position. His tail was held at a medium length -- something respectable but not demanding of submission -- and he held himself in a promising stance with his shoulders square and head relaxed.

Cadmon was obviously nervous and full of uncertainty. Hythyr heard the condition in his statement. If he planned to join. Hythyr turned his comforting gaze to his friend."There are rules of course, but they pretty much add up to take care of your pack. We watch out for each other here. You'll also be happy to hear that we don't allow the keeping of omegas. Don't worry Cadmon. It'll all become clear soon." Hythyr turned and smiled brightly as his friend and mentor approached. His flame coat was bright against the dreary grays and whites that covered the range behind him. Although Fanul was about the same height as Hythyr he appeared to be a little taller than the pair that stood on the lower ground at the base of the rocky mount. Hythyr remembered his joining at very near the same spot that last fall. The crimson and gold leaves had dropped and settled into Hythyr's adolescent fur as he had first howl to the fox-king. A wild child had been taken into the pack and now here he stood a warrior and trusted beta. Fanul was still as noble yet roguish as he was the night the brown warrior first met him. Hythyr gave the Alpha a deep bow and wagged his tail with excitement also mirroring the way he appeared before Fanul the first time."Greetings Fanul! I've brought with me a friend that was interested in joining the pack. I would have tested him myself, but he wished to meet you in person before deciding. I believe he would like to introduce himself." Hythyr stood to the side, perpendicular to his Alpha and his apprentice. There was not much left for him to do at this point. He would be there to support his friend and would vouch for his skills if necessary. However, Hythyr didn't think it would be a problem as Fanul was excellent judge of character. Hythyr smiled at Cadmon with reassurance as he watched confident in his friends abilities.

Cadmon felt relieved when Hythyr told him that there were no omegas in Alyxio. The last thing Cadmon needed was to be at the bottom of the chain again so more wolves could pick abuse him. His skin prickled as he remembered the pain of his and his claws tensed with anger at what had happened to him and those he loved. He would not let those things happen to him again, which was why this meeting was so pertinent. Fanul might be testing Cadmon to see if Cadmon was worthy for Alyxio, but Cadmon was judging to see if Fanul was worthy to be his alpha. At least the reassurance the there were no omegas in Alyxio reassured Cadmon. At least according to that law, Fanul had no intention of abusing his subordinated for no reason.

He was about to ask Hythyr another question when the flame-colored wolf came striding down the mountain. Cadmon amazed at the grace of the wolf’s movements. He had of course met Fanul at the lake and had been impressed with the wolf’s wit, but that had been at the lake when Fanul was not playing the role of alpha. Now Cadmon saw the wolf in his true element. Fanul just stood a bit higher that Cadmon and Hythyr. The fox-colored creature had his tail held just high enough to ask for the respect of other, but not too high where he intimidated his subordinate. His shoulders were angled in the way that did indeed show he was the head of Alyxio. Cadmon noted all this about his possible future alpha. He was impressed. He had been worried that Fanul was one of those alpha’s the just obnoxiously demanded respect in the pack territory, but Cadmon just got the impression that Fanul simply received respect from his subordinates via his good leadership. Cadmon made sure not to look to long into Fanul’s eyes. The last thing he wanted was to make the wrong impression and accidentally challenge Fanul. Cadmon was that ambitious. In fact he wasn’t ambitious in that respect at all. He just wanted freedom from his past and the power to protect others.

He heard Hythyr address his leader and tell Fanul that Cadmon would introduce himself. Cadmon fought the urge to shoot a dirty look at his new friend. Cadmon was still not sure if he should give Fanul his name, but soon he reasoned with himself that sooner or later Fanul would have to know his name. And from what he saw from Fanul so far, Fanul wasn’t a bad guy. Still, one couldn’t be too careful. “I do indeed wish to join your pack; however, there are reasons I don’t give my name so freely, and before I do so I must ask Fanul, what kind of leader are you?” He didn’t use a sharp or sarcastic tone as he asked. He needed Fanul to answer this question, and though Cadmon was prepared to throw in his snarky side if the wolf answered wrong, he desperately wanted the wolf to answer right. He was tired of running and wanted a home.

How strange it was that such a brusque and abrasive wolf would come knocking upon his door for refuge. And still, he chose not to provide his name, detailing his resistance as due to personal reasons. What was in a name? Fanul never thought much about name; he did not link them with identities. Even if Fanul were to change his namesake to something else, the same fox would lie beneath his fiery fur. His mind, voice and soul were still his own, a potent combination that could not be tied to something as simple as a name, a mere word. Even his last name, his lineage did not mean much to the fox -- bloodlines were nothing more than aged strings that could be easily severed. He sought talent, raw and true talent, instead. The heir to Alyxio would not necessarily be of blood -- he or she would be the one most suitable for the rule, the one who could command armies and sing songs of old.

"I see." These were the two words that Fanul directed at Hythyr, although his gaze never faltered upon the newcomer. Unlike many others, he did not merely see what stood before him. He saw past that, looked into his eyes and peered at his soul, smelled the tale of instinct and history behind the stranger, and studied his posture, the way he carried himself in poise and stature. Despite this newcomer's resistance to what many would deem as common courtesy, Fanul sensed not a malicious wolf, but someone whose past was riddled with shame and hurt. Perhaps there was more to this lad than what was merely in his words.

Even so, Fanul had to protect his home and his fellow wolves. While he trusted Hythyr's judgment, there was an assessment that the fox felt he had to perform himself -- this stranger carried a dark past in his heart, a formidable memory that would prevent him from moving toward a brighter future. Such a wolf would be of no use to Alyxio. After a few brief moment of cogitation, Fanul parted his lips and spoke. "You know my name," he said. "And you know Hythyr's. Do you not think it discourteous to demand further personal information before relinquishing a name?" His words were neither harsh nor condescending, but instead firm and questioning. As the alpha, the supreme leader of this pack, Fanul had the responsibility to defend Alyxio. He had a sick mate, pups, and those who took refuge in the mountains. Although this newcomer was hardly threatening, with Demetrius' recent trespass, Fanul would not take any chances. "You say you have reasons for not providing your name, and likewise, I have my reasons for requesting it." It made sense; if a wolf wished to join Alyxio, the least he could do would be to give a name and reason for joining. If this strange expected Fanul to place trust in him, then he must first place trust in Fanul.

Cadmon's fur prickled at bit as Fanul asked for his name again. To Cadmon, his name was essence of his past. He had refused to disclose it to those who did not know what he had been through. It felt too personal though it was a name, and its very purpose was to give a title others could address him by. But Cadmon had become so averse to other wolves that his name had been twisted in his own mind. It wasn't just a title anymore, it was a knot. It was the knot that tied him to his past. It was a vulnerable and personal knot that he had trouble showing people before him.

And now here was a wolf, an alpha, requesting to see that knot before Cadmon knew anything more about this alpha. He felt annoyed by this. A few weeks ago, he probably would've have snapped at the alpha and stormed off. Hell! A few weeks ago he wouldn't even have considered joining a pack. But now he more than considered it. He knew he needed it, though part of him didn't want to be in such a social setting.

He nearly asked Fanul to answer his question first when he considered a few things. First, Fanul was an alpha and Cadmon had to be careful about what he said. Second, he wanted to be in this, and when he met the other pack members he would have to disclose his name. He was going to be living with these wolves after all. But moreover, he needed to move on from his past. Cadmon had know this for a while, and now he would have to move past the knot that tied him to the horrors tormented him. And to do that he would have to show it to those he met.

He eyed Fanul carefully. "If you must know, alpha, my name is Cadmon Phelan." Cadmon felt a chill go up his spine as he said it. He didn't know that this knot had such a hold over him. "Now, can you answer my previous question? Or will i have to find out on my own?"

Irritation ensued, a vibrant chaos gnawing at the newcomer's heart -- it was the feeling of unease that he had felt within the ranks of Renatio, a starving desire for peace, but the contradictory inability to seek it. Fanul's molten gold eyes did not leave Cadmon, not even for a moment, and he studied the lad in an attempt to achieve an understanding of the motives that festered within his soul. Upon relinquishing his name, Fanul knew that the healing process had began. It was the process, the beginning of a long a tedious road, that Cadmon would eventually break through to the realization of a new world, a new start, and place that would spring alive with light and love if he would allow it.

"Very well," he said smoothly. Normally, Fanul would merely smile his fox-grin and then return to his dens within the mountains to spend the rest of the day with his mate and pups, but it seemed that Cadmon truly needed the answer to his question or else he might just turn tail and leave. It was not that Fanul needed pack members to fill Alyxio's ranks; in fact, Fanul would rather wait for the truly talented than to induct members who were not worthy. However, there was a gift that this vagabond bore within his mind, and Fanul would see to it that Cadmon would join Alyxio if he dared to extend his paw. "I am a leader who explores the talents of his fellow wolves, a collector and investor in skill, if you will." He spoke the truth. And even if this was not the answer that Cadmon was looking for, there was no denial in his words.

"I fostered Alyxio as a refuge for those who wish to hone their natural gifts in peace; if you have a talent that you are willing to work at, then you are welcome withing Lemures' borders." That was the reasoning for his creation of Alyxio and his reason for becoming a king. From a rogue to a lord, he was. He knew what it was like to be at the bottom rung of the ladder. "Here, power comes in the form of knowledge and skill, not blood or mere strength." Yes, he knew that fully well, for he was neither the strongest nor the most royal of wolves, but with experience and long hours of honing, he was one of the most vicious warriors in Torva. "In Alyxio, you need not fear, for fear is unconducive to progress, and progress is what I wish to achieve." Would that do?

Can we specialize in two things in Alyxio?

Cadmon listened as Fanul spoke honestly of his pack and its purpose. Unlike most packs focused on survival, Alyxio seemed to encourage the concept of enhancing one’s skills. This intrigued Cadmon. He had expected something about protections and diligence, but he never expected that there was a pack which had the major purpose of developing skills. But then, skills were just as important to survival. He remembered talking to his father once about skill when he was young. It had been the glory days of the pack, before Fraoch had challenged and chased his father off. Cadmon remembered that discussion he had with his father when asked about the role of alpha…

“Dad,” the young Cadmon addressed the black wolf next to him. They were both in the den. He was around two months now. He had once had two brothers, but a harsh winter in their first few weeks had killed them. Cadmon was the only to survive by some miracle. His father once told him it was his stalwart determination that saved him. Cadmon continued with a question, “Since you’re alpha, does that mean I’ll have to be alpha too someday?” Cadmon had been more scared than intrigued by the idea. He was the alpha’s son. He wondered if such a situation made him the heir to the pack’s throne.

His father smiled. “If you wish it, and you earn it, I would be happy to give it to you.” The older wolf licked the top of Cadmon’s small head. Cadmon wrinkled his nose at the open display of affection. He was two months old and way too old for that, or so he though in his young mind. Cadmon’s father laughed at Cadmon’s scrunched face.

Cadmon tried to wipe the lick of his head with his paws. The attempt just made his fur more ruffled prompting his father to lick him again. “Dad!” Cadmon complained as her tried again to wipe it off. This time he managed to keep his fur down, for fear of his father’s tongue. “I’m just saying, I don’t know if I want to be alpha when I grow up. I look at all these wolves, and I don’t know how I would command them like you do.” He looked sheepishly up at his father. “Are you angry at me?”

Cadmon’s father smiled. Cadmon liked it when his father smiled. Cadmon had seen his father look stern and commanding at the other wolves. It didn’t scare Cadmon when his father looked like this, but when the older wolf smiled, Cadmon felt like warmer and comforted from any troubled he had. “No, of course I’m not angry,” the elder said, “We are all called to do something on this earth by our Creator, and we are given a set of skills that allow us to do so. The Creator might not be calling you to be an alpha. He may want you to be something else. You could be a ranger, a healer, or a…”

“OR A FIGHTER!” Cadmon suddenly lept up on his father’s tail and began playing with it. The two played a game where Cadmon tried to smack the tail, and his father swished it out of the way at the last minute continually. “Hey!” Cadmon complained with a laugh. Then his father picked up Cadmon by the scruff and put the pup between his front legs. Cadmon caught the look in his father’s face that told him that the older wolf was about to say something very important. In instinct, Cadmon sat up and looked into his father’s brown eyes (Cadmon had inherited his silver one’s from his mother).

“Now listen, Cadmon, because whether or not you become an alpha, this is very important. Every wolf has value. More value than you or I can comprehend. It is not only their skills that make them valuable but also because they were sent here by the Creator to do something important. You may not see it, and you may not understand it when they do, but know this: Each wolf has a purpose, and each wolf makes an impact. Do you understand?” Cadmon nodded…

And that was the last he remembered of that bit of his father. He looked over at Fanul. Fanul seemed to understand that value in a wolf, and Cadmon, despite his enraged outer shell, respected that. He respected it enough to finally make his decision. “I am done with fear. It has dictated my life since I left my former pack.” He looked at Fanul as he verbalized his final decision. “I would like to join your pack, Fanul. If you would have me, I can both heal and protect your warriors. I know herbs very well, and your Ace here has taught me much about fighting to defend others. And in your pack I know I can enhance these skills as well as help you pack.”

"I see you are ambitious," Fanul said, glad to hear that he had recruited such a talented individual, despite how curt and snappish he might have been. But, then again, who was to be a judge of this talent until Cadmon had been assessed? Hythyr seemed to speak for him, so evaluation could wait until formalities had been established.

Ambition was welcomed, but there were other matters of importance to consider as well. As a new member of Alyxio, Cadmon not only had to be evaluated, but his inflexible nature left Fanul pondering the possibilities. Wolves were welcome to specialize in whatever they wished, but they had to be able to keep up with their practices, so when their talents were needed, they were expert enough to suffice. Perhaps it would be better of Cadmon entered with only one official skill as he adjusted to pack life. If he wished, he could continue honing the second talent until he was gifted enough to join the ranks of the other experts in that field. Yes, that seemed like the best idea.

Since it seemed that fighting was the newer of his two chosen specializations, Fanul knew what he would ask of Cadmon. "I would like you to start as one of our Herbalists," he began with a deft nod of his head. "I am sure you will do well within those ranks." Here, he turned to Hythyr, his loyal Ace. "If Hythyr consents, then he will continue to provide instruction on being a Champion. Hone your skills for two month's time, and then I will evaluate your progress." Fanul trusted his Ace's decree in accepting Cadmon -- obviously, he must have showed promise to have struck the Champion's eye. Evaluation directly from Fanul seemed unnecessary; he would save that for when Cadmon decided he was ready to become an official warrior.

"Now, if you will follow me, I will show you to the dens." Fanul turned, ready to begin the climb up the mountain. It was arduous, but necessary -- the wolves here learned to stretch and exercise their muscles on a daily basis. "Welcome to Alyxio, my friend."

Hythyr was a little nervous as Cadmon at first didn't want to give his name, but Fanul was a clever man and was able to convince the young wolf to tell him. Cadmon was obviously nervous that the Alpha of Alyxio would turn out to be some vicious brute. However, as always, Fanul proved to be a patient and clever man. The Virtuoso seemed to have a knack for judging a wolf's character just by looking at them. Hythyr could see that the flame-coated man seemed to figure out just the way to speak to Cadmon in order to get him to trust him; at least marginally. Cadmon asked what kind of leader Fanul was. Hythyr nodded as the man explained that talent and knowledge drove their pack. The brown Ace himself fought with skill rather than power when practicing his talent. The fox-king seemed to touch on Cadmon's fears as well, saying that he would no longer have to fear as he honed his practice in Alyxio. Hythyr smiled as Cadmon said that he was done with fear and joined the pack. The leader thought it best that the newcomer start with one designated skill. Hythyr had to agree. Though Cadmon was already a decent fighter, Hythyr would have to help him further hone his skill."Yes, I will consent to teach Cadmon the way of the warrior." Fanul began to trek up the mountain to the den. Hythyr started to follow him up stopping to say one last thing."Welcome home Cadmon."

Cadmon nodded at the terms about specializing. "I understand," he said. He didn't mind just being a herbalist as long as he could still train to be a warrior (or "champion" as they called it). He would work hard to meet up to Fanul's standards when he evaluated Cadmon in two months. "Thank you," he said. He watched his new alpha (or Virtuoso as he would have to start saying) start up the hill. The leader's wish of welcome to Cadmon, sent a surprising chill of excitement up his spine. The word "Alyxio" echoed with great prominence. Alyxio: now the name meant something more than just another pack to him. It was his pack. Not his that he own, but the one the he belonged to. He was part of a pack now. The idea seemed so foreign to him, yet it also felt right. He didn't have to run anymore or fear his past. He could start building up now. Of course, the ever-present fear of fate's cruel hand still hummed in Cadmon's mind, but Cadmon was so frustrated by this fear that he would face the dangers involved with building himself up. He could gain so much, but he could also lose so much at the same time. He looked over to Hythyr. The dark warrior got up to follow his leader. Before he left he said, "Welcome home, Cadmon."

Now Fanul's wish of welcome had sent chills through Cadmon. These words from Hythyr floored Cadmon. Of course it should have been obvious, Alyxio was Cadmon's home now, but the way Hythyr said it made it feel like the true kind of home that would help Cadmon grow. He said it like they were brothers, which they were. Cadmon managed a smile as he watched the Ace walk up the mountain.

Camdon started up the mountain, but then gave himself pause, allowing himself one last chance to back down. Should he go up this mountain and join Alyxio, or was the pack life just not for him? He thought for a moment. He looked up at the white mountains. Was that really his home? His outer shell screamed now, but now Cadmon saw his outer shell more as a twisted friend who tried to give you advice. It just wasn't trustworthy anymore. The he thought of his dad, who taught his courage above all and to always try his best. Imaged of his father, his mother, and Trocaire flashed in his eyes. He was not going to leave them by going up the mountain, but he was going to allow the pain to wash away. He would do his best to do that, just like his father had taught him. With a deep breath Cadmon ascended the mountain after Hythyr and Fanul. And as he did so, he could almost feel the support of his mother and father walking beside him while in his mind he saw Trocaire's smile. Yes, he could build up from this.
