Morana's Birth
Screams echoed over the raging winds as the cries of labor hung thick within the air. He stood an emotionless tower outside in the bitter cold as the blizzard swirled wild snowflakes all around his fiery pelt. The cold did little to sway him, but the heat of his father's massive body and his brother's sitting far to the side was enough to stifle some of the winter chill. It was not a night for a birth to occur, but it was happening in spite of Mother Nature's wrath. He watched his with father pace with a weary eye. Every so often he would draw near the den entrance high upon the citadel, but would be quickly cast away by the governess aiding his mother during the birth. Morpheus was only a yearling, barely in to his adolescence when his sister was thrust into the world with a vengeance. The satisfaction that was in his parents eyes and the bitterness held in his brothers. It was the first royal daughter and pride gleamed in the two toned gaze of his father.
He remembered his father motioning for him to come forward and enter the Emperor's den. The young wolf was the firstborn and rightful heir to a powerful empire that spanned out across the Tundra landscape all the way to the western shores where it was said that savage outcasts plotted the demise of their civilization. One day he would have to govern the chaos and keep the safety of their clans, but for now all those thoughts had melted away upon the sight of his sister as she came into the world on the worst winter night they'd had in years. The image was almost comical for the little pup bore a pelt of crystalline ivory. Fur white as snow, she truly was a child of the storm.
"Morana. For nothing good could come of her." A fanatical prediction by a proud mother and a hopeful father. He was unsure how the title of goddess of death could be given to such a small fluff ball. Two toned eyes, the trademark of his families ancestry, bore down upon the child with a curious glean. He had never seen anything so small before. So helpless. Nostrils flared as he took in her unique scent. Goddess of death. He could not see it in his little sister even at birth, but there were high expectations for a daughter born of two reputable warriors. Emperor Chaitan was known for his relentlessness and expertise. He had never lost a fight which kept many of those who would attempt to start a war nervous to commit to such actions. His mother, Rai'lynn, was a strong willed warrior who had proven herself a worthy adversary even for the strongest of males. Who else would his father have chosen for a mate? With those facts weighing heavy upon her tiny shoulders, Morpheus knew that she would have trouble living up to such absurd expectations. Just as I have.
The first time she opened her eyes his hardened heart melted into nothing more than a puddle. Yet he could not let it show on the exterior for fear of ridicule. There were rules he had to live by if he was to govern without question. But he could not help but smile as she scampered across the tundra for the first time with her jaws open and tongue hanging to the side. It was those first days that the pride of their parents began to waver. A free spirited child was nothing to encourage even at the young age of two full moons. He felt it his responsibility to try and keep a watchful eye over her. Little Morana. She was doomed from the start. With a playful nature and two eyes like sapphires glistening in the sunlight. Without the family inheritance of two toned eyes, Chaitan did not see her as having their divine ancestors residing inside of her.
As a child he was raised with the stories of their ancestors; how they were descendants of sky gods and their uniquely colored eyes expressed the joining of two souls, the mortal spirit and the god who inhabited them. Perhaps that is why they had gotten away with ruling for so long. No one had the courage to doubt it even when Morpheus doubted it himself. One eye like the icebergs that floated to the north and one like the sun cast in fire. A unique blend of both his parents. When his little sister showed no sign of this distinction, father had lost his interest in her. That was the day he knew his sister would need all the help she could get to survive her father. The boy knew from experience that when his father selected someone to spite, his fury was relentless; even if it was from his own flesh and blood.

Sibling Rivalry
Mathias and Malikai would never receive and award for the greatest brothers to exist on this earth. Though one thing they were definitely good at was sharing equal hate for their elder brother. Morpheus could see the spite in their eyes regardless of how well they attempted to hide it. A jealousy that burned for a right that was given and unwanted by the fiery wolf. His father trained him into the ground while his siblings were handed off to a soldier in the clan who's reputation was renown for his unique battle style. That did not matter to them however, bitter that their father refused to train them the way that Morpheus was. One thing they could never expect though was how much their brother despised the rigorous schedule and the hours spent testing his limits and fighting the numerous soldiers of Teo'chan. At times even Rai'lynn thought he was training to hard when he would return with bleeding paws and scars across his battered legs.
"It will make him stronger." How many times did he hear the conversation coming from his parents den. He could not count them on his toes. Days were lost at a time when he would run off and just watch his sister's playful antics. He could still hear his father's shouts echoing in his mind as he raged after them when they would run across the tundra away from city and in to the wild. But all the rage would be stifled by his sister's laughter and wide smile. All he could do was succumb to smiling as well. It was always worth it despite the lashing that he received when they returned home. He would always take the punishment for the two of them, knowing how much it pained his little sister when father struck her. The fiery youth stuck it out to make sure Morana never lost her spirit.
His brother's put his devotion for his sister to the test one day when he found them daring her to steal father's necklace; a weaving of musk fur and the teeth of his defeated foes that he wore around his neck at the alter for every sacrifice. It was kept nestled away in the confines of his den. To steal it was one of the most heinous of crimes; any caught with it would be sentenced to death. Ears flattened as he overheard the conversation, his lips peeling back to bear ivory teeth in a menacing display. Fur bristled along his fiery cape. "What do you think your doing?" He growled at them with a narrowed glean in his mismatched eyes. They turned to look at him with a foolish mischievous grin plastered on their faces. Mathias's chocolate fur ruffled as he shrugged his shoulders.
"We were only playing. You seem to be good at that lately, right?" Banter was anything but playful, mocking his elder sibling for being so upbeat around Morana. Without batting an eye he struck out at Mathias, jaws parting and snapping tight around his brother's nose. He heard a sharp whine as teeth dug into flesh and the quick flash of ivory that signaled his sister was fleeing from the fight. Morpheus felt Malikai's teeth dig into his shoulder, his cinnamon coated brother joining in on the quarrel. They wanted nothing more than a chance to double team him and they seized upon the opportunity without hesitation.
The fight came to an abrupt halt several moments later when he scented his father's musk approach as well as several of his elite soldiers. Though they were all in trouble, it was Morpheus that felt the sting of his father's teeth upon his neck dragging him from his grasp on Mathias. He made sure to dig deep as teeth were torn away, leaving deep gashes on his brother's muzzle. The look of pure malice that shimmered in his eyes was nothing to scoff at and he could tell by the look in his young siblings eyes that he had done something they never expected. Tail tucked between their legs as he the fiery wolf turned to face his father's angry eyes. "What do you think you three are doing?!" He bellowed at the three of them in a furious baritone growl, reverberating off the frozen ground where they stood. "Explain yourselves! You are a shame to your heritage for fighting amongst yourselves." Mathias and Malikai had grown silent, fearful of their father's wrath as they turned to glare at Morpheus. As he gazed into his father's sapphire and emerald eyes, he could only snort with frustration. "It was nothing. It won't happen again." He turned to face his siblings once more, who could only nod in acceptance in the given moment. There was no way to know for sure if it wouldn't happen again.
Morpheus stocked off without another word, leaving his father in a furious state and his soldiers baffled. Ears swiveled on the top of his head as he heard whines come from the place he had just departed. Father had decided to take his frustrations out on his siblings in one brief moment. As he came over the next hill, he found little Morana peeking over the edge with widened eyes. Ears drew up on her head as she gave him a quizzical stare. "Father doesn't know." Was all he said to her before nodding for her to follow him back to the dens. She gave one quick glance back over the hill to where Mathias and Malakai were getting their punishment before following after her larger brother. The seriousness of the moment ebbed away like honey from the comb as her playful laughter once more filled the air. "Race you home!" She barked at him before sprinting forward on lithe legs. He could never match her speed, but he could play along. "I'm sure I'll win this time." He growled after her, but she was already so far ahead of him it would be impossible to catch up. All he could do was chuckle and let the anger of the fight fall away from his mind.
